5 Feminist Anthems to Pump You Up When You're Feeling Down

Bad days happen. There’s always something trying to bring down your mood. For me, this week, it’s a furious teething baby who is trying to learn how to walk and keeps falling on her face in the process. I love you baby but pull yourself together.

Anyway. Sometimes you just need a straight-up girl power pick-me-up. Here is your playlist. You’re welcome.

Destiny’s Child – Independent Woman

Because duh. Just relax and let the glory of early Beyoncé wash over you, in this perfect promotional movie tie-in package. Try not to laugh too hard at the horrible special effects in this video.

Rihanna ft. Jay-Z – Umbrella

Listen to this song. Sing along to it. Imagine you are singing to your best lady friend in the world. Better yet, go find her, and sing it to her. Rejoice in the beauty of your friendship. If this doesn’t make your heart grow three sizes, you might not have one.

(random side note: I just learned I’ve been spelling Rihanna’s name incorrectly for the past decade. Sorry Ri-Ri)

Amy Winehouse – Tears Dry On Their Own

I’m a pretty huge Amy Winehouse fan. This song is just stupid good. Most of her songs are just stupid good. This might be the most cheerful breakup song ever. No matter what’s got you down, this song will make you feel like you’re going to be a-ok.

Janelle Monáe ft. Erykah Badu – Q.U.E.E.N.

I’m running out of ways to say “this song is so ridiculously badass”. This one is, though. “Even if it makes others uncomfortable, I will love who I am.”

Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

Ignore the haters. Channel your inner Swifty, put on your kitty cat sweatshirt, and shake it off. You are too fabulous to be brought down.
